R.O. Blechman Retrospective at the Norman Rockwell Museum

R.O. Blechman is the subject of a retrospective, from May 11 to June 30, at the Norman Rockwell Museum, in Stockbridge MA, entitled The Inquiring Line. 
The following is his speech from the opening night.

Veteran B.C. newspaper satirist Dan Murphy drew a funny editorial cartoon the other day. It looks like a $50 bill, except it’s for $90,000 and features a picture of Mike Duffy.

Egyptian Cartoonist Doaa El Adl

Considered by many to be Egypt’s most famous female cartoonist, Doaa El Adl has been making Egyptian headlines with two of her recent cartoons. The first, which was published in February 2013 shows a man reaching a pair of scissors between a woman’s legs to cut off a red flower – a criticism of Female Genital Mutilation.

Iranian Cartoonist Kianoush Ramezani on Three Kinds of Cartoons

In 2009, following Iran’s controversial election, many Iranians took to the streets and the web to voice their dissatisfaction. One of those who participated was Kianoush Ramezani, who at that time was publishing cartoons online as well as in Shahrvand, a Persian magazine based in Canada. Ramezani drew several cartoons criticizing the election results. Over the next seven months, Ramezani watched as his friends and colleagues were arrested. It seemed inevitable that it would happen to him too. Finally Ramezani had no choice: He fled Iran in December of 2009 and was granted political asylum in France. Since then Ramezani has continued to draw and speak out against oppression in his home country.

In this interview, Ramezani describes the three kinds of cartoonists in Iran, how the government controls cultural institutions, and why the Iranian government will never be able to control the internet.

Chris Sparks announced that Watterson has agreed to provide the autographed books to be sold and or auctioned off at Heroescon and other comic conventions this year. Proceeds to go to the Michael J Fox Foundation.

Editorial Cartoonists Are Toast at Postmedia

After Roy Peterson (Vancouver Sun), Vance Rodewalt (Calgary Herald), Dan Murphy and Bob Krieger (Vancouver Province), Cameron Cardow (Ottawa Citizen) is the latest editorial cartoonist to lose his staff position at a Postmedia daily newspaper.

UPDATE: Paul Godfrey was fired Thursday as chairman of the OLG board by Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne.

Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein currently has a show on at the Tate. While the public is intimately familiar with his work, what they may be unaware of is how closely many of his images were "appropriated" from comic artists like Irv Novick, Russ Heath, Jack Kirby, John Romita and Joe Kubert, who received no fee or credit.

Is this an act of brilliant recontexturalisation? The elevation of commercial "low" art to "high" art? Art world snobbery? Artistic licence? Cultural annexation? Gallery shortsightedness? Or something else?

The Image Duplicator Show, May 16 - 31 (a week pre and post the end of the Tate's Lichtenstein show) at the Orbital Gallery, Leicester Square, London gives a chance for real comic-book artists (and other "commercial artists" - illustrators, designers etc) to ask these kinds of questions and share their views, via their work.

Fougasse (1887-1965)

"Fougasse" is a type of bread typically associated with Provence but is also the nom de plume of London born cartoonist Cyril Kenneth Bird. His work first appeared in Punch in 1916 where he became Art Editor and then Editor from 1949 to 1952. He illustrated a number of books, including The Luck of the Draw (1936), Drawing the Line Somewhere (1937), and The Good Tempered Pencil (1956).

Our picks were announced today at the World Press Freedom Day Luncheon at the Ottawa Congress Centre.

The theme this year was "Hard times and free speech".

"Steadman @ 77" at the Cartoon Museum

A major retrospective of the work of Ralph Steadman, to mark the acclaimed cartoonist’s 77th birthday, opened at the Cartoon Museum in London on May 1st.
