Just a few days before the Kirby v. Marvel case was scheduled to be considered by the Supreme Court, both parties settled, out of court. This was unexpected and it sure feels good to write that compensation (and, I hope, credit on the movies) is on its way to the Kirby heirs.

Renowned photographer Sandro Miller has worked together with legendary Hollywood A-Lister John Malkovich many times, but when Miller wanted to celebrate the photography greats that had inspired and guided him, he had to do something special. So he, with Malkovich as his dashing unisex model, recreated some of those influential photographers’ most important portraits in a photo series called “Malkovich, Malkovich, Malkovich: Homage to photographic masters.”

"Satire Fest" in San Francisco

For three days in October (9th to 11th), the Marines' Memorial Theater will host Satire Fest and showcase some of the best talent in satire. Events will range from Pictionary-style "draw-offs" to lessons about cartooning in wartime to hands-on tips about making a living doing something as unique as visual satire. There will be performances, pictures and politics from left, right, center, up and down. (As well as opportunities to buy signed art and merchandise from your favorite cartoonist.)

"The Coalition Book" by Martin Rowson

Ottawa International Animation Festival 2014

From September 17th to 21st, the nation's capital will once again become the center of the animation universe. The Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) is the largest event of its kind in North America, a major film event attracting attendees from around the world. Film buffs, art lovers and cartoon fans thoroughly enjoyed this year's great line up of screenings.

Nate Beeler wins John Fischetti Award

The Columbus Dispatch editorial cartoonist Nate Beeler was named this year’s John Fischetti award winner for 2014. The award is unique in that it is based on one single cartoon. Nate’s cartoon depicted the Statue of Liberty and Lady Justice in a joyful kiss after the Supreme Court ruled on the Defense of Marriage Act.

"The Auld Acquaintance" in London

The Auld Acquaintance exhibition is also under way in London at the News & Media Gallery of The Guardian & Observer newspapers in the thick of the hubbub at Kings Cross St Pancras and not far from the newly opened House of Illustration.

The exhibitions are free of charge and open daily. The show will close the weekend after the referendum. In Glasgow we shut on 19 September and in London on 21 September.
