World Humor Awards: From a Small to a Great World

The exhibition of the works in competition in the first edition of the World Humor Awards was inaugurated last Wednesday in the stables of the Villa Pallavicino in Busseto, Italy.

140 cartoonists from 51 countries and 70 Italian submitted work under the theme "Climate Change" while 25 foreigners and 20 Italians did the same in the caricature category.

Refugee detained on Manus Island Wins Award for Courage in Editorial Cartooning

An Iranian man currently detained in the Manus Island detention centre has won an international cartooning award for courage.

Ali, who goes by the pen name Eaten Fish, has been detained in Australia’s offshore immigration processing centre for more than three years. The 25-year-old suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder and has been assaulted while in the centre.

The award-winning cartoonist Richard Thompson, widely known for his syndicated comic strip Cul de Sac and Richard’s Poor Almanac cartoons, died of complications from Parkinson’s Disease at the age of 58 on July 27, 2016. A memorial service was held at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. Saturday, August 27.

Officials at the Gabrovo House of Humor and Satire, a relic of a vanished regime, on more or less the margins of Central Europe, talk wistfully about becoming a more popular destination once again, if only they could come up with the money and a good plan. If only. 

Across the former Communist world museums like the House have been repurposed as ironic attractions for tourists often too young to remember much if anything about the Soviet era. Funnily, the House of Humor and Satire isn’t one of these. It lacks irony.

Touchingly so.

Born on June 12 1930 in the town of České Velenice on the Bohemian side of the southern border with Austria, Adolf Born studied in visual arts from 1949 to 1955 in Prague, where he lived and worked.

Bill Clinton’s address to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia last week was supposed to humanize Hillary, make her more relatable, and shift the focus away from her perpetual lies and scandals.

According to Bill, Hillary’s detractors create false impressions.

“So your only option is to create a cartoon, a cartoon alternative, then run against the cartoon,” he said. “Cartoons are two-dimensional, they’re easy to absorb.”

Political cartoonist Michael Ramirez decided the words “your only option is to create a cartoon” constituted a challenge, and he accepted.

More Than 40 Artists and Designers Accuse Zara of Plagiarism

A week ago, Los Angeles-based artist Tuesday Bassen posted a photo on Instagram contrasting her original designs for pins and patches with alleged ripoffs sold by Zara, the international clothing brand.

The products were nearly identical, featuring heart-shaped lollipops and rubber erasers. Bassen’s post went viral, and now, more than 40 independent artists and designers have come forward accusing Zara of plagiarism.
