New Yorker Cartoonist Frank Modell Has Died at 98

Frank Modell, whose first New Yorker cartoon appeared in the issue of July 20, 1946 died last Friday just a year and small change from his 100th birthday. Frank was a great cartoonist, a raconteur, a New Yorker historian, and not least, a truly truly nice person.

James Simpkins with his creation Jasper the Bear for the Maclean’s July 6, 1963 issue.

In 1948, Jim Simpkins visited the offices of Maclean’s to pitch himself as a regular cartoonist. Simpkins had studied at the Winnipeg School of Art under Group of Seven artist LeMoine FitzGerald, and was one of the original artists hired by the National Film Board, where he worked full-time for 16 years.

Mell Lazarus 1927-2016

Mell Lazarus passed away on the morning of May 24, 2016, at his home in Woodland Hills, CA.


He is best known as the creator of two comic strips, Miss Peach (1957–2002) and Momma (1970–present). For his comic strip Pauline McPeril (a 1966-69 collaboration with Jack Rickard), he used the pseudonym Fulton, which is also the name of a character in his novel, The Boss Is Crazy, Too.

Guelph's newest art installation is a celebration of the city's public life, and one of its best-known artists.
It's called "The Junkyard of Memory," a comic strip that's eighteen metres long by three metres wide and printed on fifteen aluminum panels, which were mounted to the exterior wall of the Bookshelf in downtown Guelph.

His favorite targets included capitalism, colonialism, and Christianity as well as all other major religions. A Tokyo court ruled Monday that vagina-shaped objects created by a Japanese artist qualify as art, but found her guilty of obscenity for distributing digital data that could be used to make a three-dimensional recreation of her genitalia.

Speaking to CRNI, Ms. Farghadani expressed her utmost appreciation of Cartoonists Rights Network International and all organizations, cartoonists and activists who have supported her throughout her incarceration and given a voice to her and her cause. 
She also pointed out that although she’s happy to be free, she is also concerned about all of the unknown prisoners who have no supporters.
