Turkish cartoonist given one-year jail sentence for drawing Moses

Cartoonist Seyfi Şahin, who used to work for the closed-down popular humor magazine Gırgır, has been handed down a jail sentence of one year, 15 days for insulting sacred values in a controversial cartoon featuring the biblical prophet Moses.

Glen Keane Receives 2017 NCS Reuben Award

National Cartoonists Society members have chosen the winner of the 2017 NCS Reuben Award for “Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year”.

Ballots were sent out to all voting NCS members last April, and the Reuben Award was presented to animator Glen Keane at the 72nd Annual Reuben Awards dinner on May 26th in Philadelphia, PA.

World Press Cartoon 2018

The 13th edition of the World Press Cartoon awards will return on June 2 to the Cultural and Congress Centre of Caldas da Rainha, with a great exhibition of the best works published in 2017 in newspapers and magazines from around the world. 

The winners come from eight countries on three continents: Europe, Asia and South America.

Student Cartoonist Jake Thrasher Honoured

Jake Thrasher from the University of Mississippi is the winner of the 2018 Mark of Excellence in Editorial Cartooning from the Society of Professional Journalists which honours the best in student journalism. 

Thrasher was a finalist for last year's Courage in Cartooning Award from Cartoonists Rights after receiving death threats for an anti-KKK cartoon in his university newspaper.

And in a "welcome to the real world" coda, the cartoonist noted — in the same email announcement about the SPJ award — that his position at the local Mississippi newspaper, the Oxford Eagle, was recently eliminated after the publisher left.

Out of all these submissions we made a shortlist of 200 cartoons; on March 5, this shortlist was presented to a professional jury, tasked with the difficult job to select the cartoons that will be featured in the upcoming exhibition ‘The Art of Resistance’ and to determine the winners.

The jury (composed of five members of the Canadian Committee of World Press Freedom) met on April 16th to select the winners of the 18th World Press Freedom International Editorial Cartoon Competition.

The theme, this year, was "The high price of a free press" and we received 417 entries from 49 countries.

Welcome, cartoon friends! We’re “soft launching” the “new” Daily Cartoonist this week. The site is now owned and operated by my colleagues here in Kansas City (Mo.) at Andrews McMeel. 

Our plan is to restart/continue the great cartoon news site that Alan Gardner built. Alan has been a great help in the transition and we’re thankful for his counsel and goodwill. 

As to how the site will run on a day-to-day basis: staffers here at Andrews McMeel will do the occasional post, but we’ve signed the prolific comics news junkie D.D. Degg to serve as our main news/piece contributor. 

Future TDC plans include a site redesign, long-winded Q&As with sassy puppets and the occasional dance off. Thanks for coming by and let us know if you have any feedback.
