Twitter Briefly Suspends Counterpoint's Account

The Association of American Editorial Cartoonists has asked their Twitter followers not to post Counterpoint's co-founder Nik Anderson's cartoon to Trump, his campaign as well as to the White House.

Counterpoint, which published the original cartoon, has had their Twitter account suspended.

Redbubble Restores Nick Anderson Cartoon

Thanks to CBLDF and our coalition partners, the online marketplace Redbubble has reinstated a cartoon by Pulitzer Prize–winning editorial cartoonist Nick Anderson that was previously removed because of a meritless complaint by the Trump re-election campaign.

CBLDF applauds Redbubble for reinstating the cartoon, and urges them to reject any other attempts by political campaigns to suppress protected speech.

Cartooning for Peace defends Hungarian cartoonist Gábor Pápai

Following the publication of a cartoon in the opposition daily Népszava on 28 April, Hungarian cartoonist Gábor Pápai and his newspaper are facing legal action from the ruling Christian Democratic People’s Party (KDNP) who consider the cartoon “blasphemous”.

Deputy Imre Vejkey announced that his party intended to launch legal proceedings under the Fundamental Law and the Civil Code, targeting the newspaper Népszava. 

#CanCAF: Promoting Comics Events Across Canada

Comics festivals across Canada are thrilled to announce a month-long digital initiative called #CanCAF. 

The internet-based initiative will promote the work and careers of cartoonists and publishers scheduled to participate in their festivals this year, now cancelled or postponed due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. 

Events will take place across social media platforms using the hastag #CanCAF, and a complete schedule of events through the month of May will be listed at www.cancaf.com.

Michael de Adder wins Atlantic Journalism Award

Editorial cartoonist Michael deAdder earned a gold prize in editorial cartooning for his body of work at the Atlantic Journalism Award. The gala had to be cancelled this year due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The John Locher Memorial Award

The John Locher Memorial Award is a contest for aspiring cartoonists, ages 18-25, whose work demonstrates both clear opinions and strong artistry on political and social topics.

CalArts students create editorial cartoons about the COVID-19 crisis

California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) students are creating editorial cartoons to comment on the COVID-19 crisis.

The project is spearheaded by Ann Telnaes, Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist for the Washington Post, who is visiting CalArts this semester to teach “Commentary Through Cartoons.” 

Barry Blitt wins the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning

Barry Blitt won this year's Pulitzer Prize for his political illustrations, which frequently criticize President Donald Trump and his administration.

Blitt’s work regularly appears on the cover of The New Yorker and the op-ed page of The New York Times.

World Press Freedom Day

World Press Freedom Day is observed every year on May 3rd to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, to assess the state of press freedom throughout the world, to defend the media from attacks against their independence and also to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives. 

April was an unusually busy month for threats against cartoonists.

Serge Chapleau wins National Newspaper Award 2019

Serge Chapleau of La Presse tied the record for lifetime wins when the 2019 National Newspaper Awards were announced yesterday. Chapleau won for the eighth time in the Editorial Cartooning category. Over the years Chapleau has been a finalist 15 times.

The other finalists were Brian Gable of the Globe and Mail and Bruce MacKinnon of the Halifax Chronicle Herald.
