Signe Wilkinson (semi-) retires from daily cartooning

Signe Wilkinson, the first woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning, and the cartoonist for The Inquirer and Daily News since 1985, is stepping down from daily cartooning at the end of 2020.

She will continue to make occasional guest appearances through her syndicate.

Ann Telnaes strikes again

 

After depicting as rats, in last Sunday's Opinion Page of the Washington Post, all the state attorneys and U.S. Congress members who collaborated with President Trump in his attempt to subvert the Constitution and stay in office, Ann Telnaes takes aim, this week, at the President himself.

Ann Telnaes drew as rats, in Sunday's Opinion Page of the Washington Post, all the state attorneys and U.S. Congress members who collaborated with President Trump in his attempt to subvert the Constitution and stay in office.

Indian Supreme Court Issues Contempt Notice To Rachita Taneja

the ruling party and the Supreme Court, saying "You don't know who my father is."

The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to comic illustrator Rachita Taneja on the petitions seeking criminal contempt action against her over her caricatures published in 'Sanitary Panels' social media handles about the judiciary. 

The notice is returnable within 6 weeks. The bench has dispensed with the personal presence of Taneja.

The bench noted that the Attorney General has granted consent for initiating contempt action.

Richard Corben Dies At 80

Richard Corben, a famed artist who created work for Heavy Metal, DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, and more, has died at the age of 80. 

His wife Dona Corben revealed the sad news on the Corben Studios Facebook page, where she said Richard passed away following heart surgery.

Australia: "Behind the Lines 2020: The year in political cartoons"

Two-time political cartoonist of the year Cathy Wilcox reckons you can tell a lot about a country by the state of its cartooning.

Accepting an award from the Museum of Australian Democracy as cartoonist of the Year, Wilcox (whose work appears in The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age) noted that in some countries, cartoonists are harried, pilloried or even imprisoned. Elsewhere they face extremism and intimidation.

A message of solidarity with French cartoonists and educators

The Association of Canadian Cartoonists and The Association of American Editorial Cartoonists wish to express solidarity with our cartooning colleagues and educators in France.

Viewed from our shores, the violence perpetrated by extremists has been shocking and deeply saddening.

Citizens have the right to disagree with the content of a cartoon, but that right can under no circumstances include a violent response.

The murder of Samuel Paty was a dreadful act and something no educator should ever have to fear.

Our members stand with the people of France and insist that crimes against cartooning professionals and the educators that bravely bring context to their material should never be tolerated or justified.

Temporary closure of the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum

Beginning Friday, November 20, the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum Galleries and Lucy Shelton Caswell Reading Room will temporarily close in compliance with the Franklin County Stay-At-Home advisory issued on November 18. 

This decision to close, made with careful guidance from The Ohio State University and public health officials, is to ensure the safety of our visitors and staff.

Steve Sack Wins 2020 Berryman Award

Steve Sack, editorial cartoonist at the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, has been awarded the National Press Foundation’s Clifford K. & James T. Berryman Award for Editorial Cartoons, a prestigious award named for two Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonists.

Entertainer Steve Martin has joined forces with New Yorker cartoonist Harry Bliss and will be collaborating on the syndicated “Bliss” cartoon panel indefinitely.

Steve shared caption and cartoon ideas, Harry provided artwork, and together they have created A Wealth of Pigeons, a collection of humorous cartoons and comic strips, with amusing commentary about their collaboration throughout.

Barry Blitt's "America in Line"

One does not envy the artist assigned to do a cover for a Presidential election. Four years ago, Barry Blitt aced the task, producing an image that, in a polarized country, could resonate with most any American. 

In The New Yorker’s latest issue, he pulls a similar trick, nodding only to what we already know: that many people are eager to vote, and that those who didn’t mail their ballots have often been spending hours in line to cast them. 

We recently talked to Blitt about how he’s preparing himself for the results.

The first prize goes to Marilena Nardi, with a cartoon on the border between caricature and work of art. 

Underground cartoonist and production designer Ron Cobb dies at 83

Ron Cobb, the underground cartoonist turned production designer who influenced the making of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and helped shape the worlds of Conan the Barbarian, Alien and Back to the Future, has died. He was 83.

Cobb died Monday — his birthday — of Lewy body dementia in Sydney, his wife of 48 years, Robin Love, reported.

The Tallahassee Democrat Apologizes for Published Cartoon

On Monday, the Tallahassee Democrat ran a syndicated editorial cartoon that was offensive to readers. It showed former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg in a way that some rightly said drew on stereotypes of Jewish people.

Editorial cartoonist Jeff Koterba announced on Facebook today that he was laid off trom the Omaha World Herald after 31 years of daily cartoons at his hometown newspaper.
