A Russian child's drawing sparked a police investigation

In the centre of the Russian town of Yefremov is a wall covered in pictures of war. Giant photographs of masked Russian soldiers with guns and supersized letters Z and V - symbols of the country's so-called special military operation in Ukraine.

There's a poem, too:

Good should have fists.
Good needs an iron hand
To tear the skin from those
Who threaten it.

This is the official, patriotic picture of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

But in this town, 320km (200 miles) south of Moscow, you'll find another image of the Ukraine war. A very different one.

The nominees of the 19th annual Doug Wright Awards

Nominees for the 2023 Doug Wright Awards were selected from entries of books published in the 2022 calendar year. The short list and winners were chosen by a panel of three judges for each category.

This year, a record 200 entries by Canadian authors and artists were submitted from dozens of publishers and self-published authors.

Each winner will receive a small cash prize, and the winner of The Nipper will be awarded a week-long stay at the Valleyview Artist Retreat, in Caledon, Ontario.

The Canadian Daily Newspaper Association announced today the finalists of the 74th National Newspaper Awards.

"So You Thought You Could Retire!" by Graham Harrop

The award-winning Graham Harrop creates cartoons for The Vancouver Sun and Canada’s national newspaper, The Globe and Mail, along with the online comic strip Ten Cats. 

His work has appeared in Reader’s Digest, National Post, as greeting cards and even as medical specialists’ cards.

Mike Ramirez Finalist 2023 Herblock Prize

The Foundation created the Herblock Prize in 2004 to encourage editorial cartooning as an essential tool for preserving the rights of the American people through freedom of speech and the right of expression.

Presented each spring at the Library of Congress, the prize is awarded by The Herb Block Foundation for distinguished examples of editorial cartooning that exemplify the courageous standard set by Herblock and is judged by a panel of outside experts.

The Herblock Prize finalist receives a tax free $7,500 cash award.

Bill Tidy 1933-2023

Legendary cartoonist William Edward “Bill” Tidy, MBE has died at the age of 89. 

As well as the scores of iconic cartoons he drew for PUNCH, he collaborated to Private Eye, the Daily Mirror and New Scientist.

New look for the Doug Wright Awards

Starting today, you’ll see a new look for the Doug Wright Awards, which we’ll slowly be rolling out over the next 12 months, across everything we do. 

The base element of the new design is a red button (mainly for use with social media and the like). 

The button is the centrepiece of our new day-to-day logo, and of a more formal shield (which will mainly be seen at the annual DWA ceremony). 

Our new logo features a vintage Doug Wright illustration of Nipper, and the whole thing was designed by John Montgomery, an award-winning, multi-faceted art director specializing in publishing and branding.

Wally (Trog) Fawkes 1924-2023

Cartoonist and musician Wally Fawkes “Trog“ died peacefully, at 98, last Wednesday following a short illness.

A newspaper illustrator, comic strip artist and political cartoonist, he was also a renowned musician.

Free speech or free for all

Intimidation and disinformation have become weapons in the arsenal of politicians and those who seek to control the media narrative.
Donald Trump’s rude behaviour and open disdain for rivals, the media and government institutions has encouraged others, such as Jair Borsonaro, to emulate him.
On average, Trump lied twenty times per day on Twitter and Facebook, bypassing mainstream media organizations that are responsible for checking facts.
Social media companies profit by creating algorithms that divide us and reward fear and anger, rather than accurate information.
Has mainstream media been derelict in its mission as it struggles to remain profitable? How can we filter abuse without curtailing free speech? And if that is at all possible, who would moderate the moderators?
