Justin Trudeau criticizes Toronto Sun 'antisemitic' cartoon

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau slammed (the Toronto Sun) Thursday for running a cartoon perceived as using antisemitic tropes as he raised concerns about the rising number of antisemitic incidents in Canada.

Trudeau said everyone has a role to play to ensure Canadians are there for each other, and treat people with understanding and compassion rather than playing to stereotypes.

“But I also need to make sure we are calling out incidents of antisemitism wherever they rear their heads.

Atena Farghadani awaits verdict from Iranian court

Atena Farghadani – a painter, cartoonist, and former political prisoner – faces the prospect of criminalisation for the second time in the Islamic Republic of Iran, having stood trial in recent days on charges of insulting the Supreme Leader, Intelligence Ministry officials, and the Minister of Intelligence with a cartoon.

Readers will recall that Atena Farghadani has long criticised the totalitarian regime in Iran through protest art and as a result was arrested, tried, and convicted in 2014. 

For this she received our Courage in Cartooning Award in 2015.

On view Dec. 13, 2023–May 5, 2024, the exhibit celebrates the dazzling artistry of Mexican-American cartoonist Gustavo 'Gus' Arriola.

Mongolia magazine sued by Catholic group

Cartoonist Darío Adanti, one of the editors at Mongolia humour magazine, is currently the subject of legal action from a Catholic group over a front cover photo montage that made a crude joke about The Nativity. 

There is a rash of such lawsuits pertaining to religious sensitivity, to such an extent that Amnesty International in Spain are calling for reform of the penal code
