Don Asmussen 1962-2021

Cartoonist Don Asmussen, passed away on December 9, 2021, at the age of 59, after a long battle with brain cancer.

Asmussen, 59, had been with the San Francisco Chronicle since it merged with the Hearst-owned Examiner in 2000, having worked at the Examiner for several years before that.

International Human Rights Day

Like every December 10th, the world celebrates human rights with this day that the UN has placed this year under the sign of equality and against poverty.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights opens with this first article: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”.

A principle that sounds obvious and yet, we must admit that it is not self-evident.

The 'Profusely Illustrated' Life of Edward Sorel

Toward the end of Edward Sorel’s new memoir, “Profusely Illustrated,” the veteran artist describes first seeing, in these pages, a cover review, written by Woody Allen, of his 2017 book “Mary Astor’s Purple Diary.” 

“To say that it made me ‘very happy’ would be an understatement,” he writes of the glorious moment. To Mr. Sorel, then, apologies in advance: I can only assume that seeing this byline will be pretty anticlimactic — or perhaps his habitual modesty has rubbed off. 

But if there’s one thing I learned from his memoir, it’s that the guy’s a mensch, and one with a solid regard for jobbers on a deadline.

This cartoon, which appeared in Le Monde on November 15, is signed by American cartoonist Ed Hall, a member of the Cartooning for Peace association. 

Another of his cartoons was published on the front page of the paper last August.

Telnaes named EWK Laureate

The Washington Post’s Ann Telnaes is this year’s winner of the EWK Prize. Named after political cartoonist Ewert Karlsson, and presented each year by the EWK Society in Sweden, the award celebrates satirists and cartoonists around the globe.

The selection jury noted that Telnaes’ work “appears as a ‘shining star of hope’ for picture-oriented journalism in a media landscape under pressure,” and that “her scathing visual comments, honed by her characteristic style, have been a force in the political game.”

Kambiz Derambakhsh 1942-2021

Top Iranian cartoonist Kambiz Derambakhsh, whose works were published in the world’s major newspapers and magazines such as New York Times and Spiegel, passed away in a Tehran hospital on Saturday after a severe battle with COVID-19. He was 79.

Born in Shiraz, on May 29, 1942, he began his professional career by drawing cartoons for Tofiq, Iran’s most popular satirical magazine before the Islamic revolution, when he was only 14.

Pedro X. Molina wins the 2021 Gabo Award for Excellence

The Gabo Foundation announced the Nicaraguan cartoonist, journalist, and illustrator Pedro Xavier Molina Blandón (PxMolina) as the winner of the 2021 Gabo Award for Excellence. 

He is one of the most persistent and incisive commentators on the current trends of corruption, growing authoritarianism, the rollback of civil liberties, and human rights abuses. Read PxMolina’s profile.

Hail to the King

Alan King’s most famous cartoon is probably the one he did in 1996 when Conrad Black bought the chain of Southam newspapers. 

The cartoon shows Black in front of a bowl labelled “Southam” and festooned with labels such as “Bank loans” and “Debt.” Black is saying, “I can’t believe I ate the whole thing …”

The 3rd Press & Cartooning Global Forum

The Press & Cartooning Global Forum was held on September 28th, 29th and 30th 2021. 

Organized with the active support of Artists at Risk Connection (ARC), an initiative of PEN America, NYC and under the continuing extraordinary circumstances worldwide this '21 edition was convened as a series of videoconference sessions spread over three days. 

Each year since 2017 (when the first meeting was held at UNESCO within the framework of La Presse en Liberté exhibition and its ancillary events) the Forum has brought together high-level international actors working directly with and on behalf of cartoonists; their discrete projects or ongoing programs all address cartoonists and freedom of expression.

Bruce MacKinnon Wins Reuben Award

SaltWire network cartoonist Bruce MacKinnon was honoured Saturday night by the National Cartoonists Society.

Anne Telnaes of the Washington Post presented MacKinnon with a Reuben award for editorial and political cartoons in a very efficient virtual ceremony.

The award-winning cartoon depicts the transformation of U.S. president Donald Trump from a clown to the Joker.

"Dark Laughter Revisited: The Life and Times of Ollie Harrington" Exhibition

Throughout his career, Oliver “Ollie” Harrington used his voice and artistic talents as a cartoonist to attack racial, economic and social injustice with razor-sharp wit and insight. 

Speaking from the perspective of a cartoonist of color, his commentary chronicled many of the events and issues that defined the 20th century from racism and segregation, to war and poverty. 

Harrington’s life and career intersected with the Harlem Renaissance, World War II, the Civil Rights movement, the post-war Black émigré community in Paris and communist East Germany.

"Power Lines: Comics and the Environment" Exhibition

to integrate an all-white public elementary school in the South.

In her forthcoming (November 8), poignant and most ambitious work to date, Original Sisters: Portraits of Tenacity and Courage (Pantheon Books), Kunz has identified 150 women from all ages, walks of life, races, creeds and accomplishments. 

They range from known to forgotten to misplaced, but all have one thing in common: remarkable achievements in all areas of life.

Tom Janssen wins 2nd edition of the European Cartoon Award

The European Press Prize and Studio Europa Maastricht have announced the name of the winner and runners-up of this year’s edition of the European Cartoon Award. 

With his work EU and Belarus published in the newspaper Trouw, Dutch cartoonist Tom Janssen won the first prize. The two runners-up are Dutch cartoonist, Hajo de Reijger, and the Turkish artist Musa Gumus - both published by Cartoon Movement.

Arrest and imprisonment of Tanzanian cartoonist Optatus Fwema

Cartooning for Peace condemns the arrest and imprisonment of cartoonist Optatus Fwema for cartoon.

On 4 October, the East African Cartoonists’ Society, Katuni, issued a statement informing of the arrest and imprisonment of cartoonist Optatus Fwema at Oysterbay police station, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. 

It was followed by the Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC).

Canada Post to pay tribute to five legendary editorial cartoonists

Canada Post will pay tribute to five legendary editorial cartoonists this week through a special stamp issue.

Over the next week, Canada Post will unveil five stamps that celebrate five of Canada'sgreatest editorial cartoonists, whose thought-provoking and seminal work has helped shape our national fabric over the last half-century. 

Videos and stories will be shared with each unveiling, with a special online roundtable discussion with the artists planned for Friday, October 8. 

The 2020 Townsie Awards

Wes Tyrell, president of the Association of Canadian Cartoonists met ACC past Presidents Andy Donato and Graeme Mackay to unveil the long-delayed Townsie Awards. 

They were to be given out in Ottawa last year and, because of the Covid comedy, have been sitting waiting in the Townsie closet. But, no longer!

Winner of the 3rd International Libex 2021 Competition

Tom Janssen is the winner of the editorial cartoons International Competition: LIBEX2021 dedicated to “Cancel Culture and politically correctness"

Award-winning editorial cartoonist for the Dutch national newspaper Trouw and several regional newspapers, he graduated from the Academy of Arts in Amsterdam. 

His cartoons are distributed internationally by  the Cartoonists & Writers Syndicate, Cagle Cartoons, and Voxeurop.eu and published in numerous publications including: Courrier International, Le Monde and the Japan Times.

The 2021 Robert Russell Courage in Cartooning Award

The 2021 Robert Russell Courage in Cartooning Award goes to Lagoon Eain and Waiyan Taunggyi, two exiled cartoonists who fled Myanmar after February’s military coup and who have recently found safe haven in the USA.

Originally conceived as a collection of Aislin’s own cartoons on COVID-19, the scope of the book expanded once he saw what his colleagues world-wide were producing.

All the cartoonists - Pulitzer Prize winners and small-town artists alike - donated their work to help raise money for the people and institutions who cared for us during the pandemic.

Conducted in English, it will take place online today, on the symbolic date of World Peace Day.

Ottawa International Animation Festival

The Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) is one of the world’s leading animation events providing screenings, exhibits, workshops and entertainment since 1976. 

OIAF is an annual five-day event bringing art and industry together in a vibrant hub. This year the event is taking its screenings and talks online with extended dates from September 22 to October 3.

Graham Harrop celebrates 25 years at the Vancouver Sun

Graham Harrop looks as whimsical as you might expect from a cartoonist known for aiming at the funny bone.

He seems to have a perpetual wry smile, like he’s hard-wired to see the absurdity of life. 

On his head, white hair tumbles over his forehead and ears. That he has so much of it at age 77 is a wonder.

The Euro-Mediterranean Center Librexpression (Giuseppe Di Vagno Foundation) is proud to present the 10 finalists of its editorial cartoons International Competition: LIBEX2021 dedicated to “Cancel Culture and politically correctness". 

They were chosen from the 218 cartoons submitted by160 cartoonists, from 55 different countries, by an international Jury composed of Marlene Pohle (Argentina), Marilena Nardi (Italy), Joep Bertrams (Netherlands), Z (Tunisia), Gian Paolo Accardo (Italy) and Oscar Buonamano (Italy).

Founded by Seymour Chwast, Reynold Ruffins, and Edward Sorel—and soon joined by Milton Glaser—Push Pin served as a counterpoint to the slick ads being created on Madison Avenue and the rigid, grid-based designs popular in Europe.
