New Yorker Cartoonist Lee Lorenz Dies at 90

Lee Lorenz, The New Yorker‘s art editor from 1973-1993, and cartoon editor from 1993-1997, passed away yesterday morning at his home in Easton, Connecticut. 

Lee contributed cartoons and covers to The New Yorker for fifty-seven years, from March 8, 1958 through 2015.

Underground Cartoonist Aline Kominsky-Crumb Dies At 74

The underground comix scene, which arose from the counterculture of the 1960s, was not especially supportive of female artists. 

One of the few to break through and leave a lasting legacy was Aline Kominsky-Crumb, whose frank, self-lacerating, darkly humorous stories helped inspire generations of visual storytellers and the wider culture. 

Word started spreading on social media that Kominsky-Crumb died on Tuesday at her home in France from pancreatic cancer. She was 74.

George Lois, an icon of ads and magazine covers, has died at 91

George Lois, the hard-selling, charismatic advertising man and designer who fashioned some of the most daring magazine images of the 1960s and popularized such catchphrases and brand names as "I Want My MTV" and "Lean Cuisine," has died. He was 91.

Lois' son, the photographer Luke Lois, said he died "peacefully" Friday at his home in Manhattan.

Happy 80th, Aislin: A Fanfare of Birthday Cartoons for Terry Mosher

Filipino Cartoonist shot and killed in ambush

Cartoonist and art teacher Benharl Capote Kahil (Ben) was shot and killed on November 5 while riding his motorbike home in Lebak, Sultan Kudarat. 

The motive for the killing is unknown.

New Yorker cartoonist George Booth passed away on Tuesday November 1. less than a week following the death of his wife, Dione.

His cartoons usually featured older couples beset by modern complexity and interacting with cats and dogs.

Dennis Renault, a political cartoonist for The Sacramento Bee and McClatchy’s other California newspapers for nearly 30 years, died Wednesday in an accident in Fremont Peak State Park, Monterey County. 

He was 86. 

Pascal Élie 1959-2022

Canadian cartoonists lost a great friend last week. Pascal Élie, the editorial page cartoonist for Le Devoir died after a long, frustrating battle with Parkinson's disease.

Kevin Kallaugher on the art of editorial cartooning

Grotesquerie is Kevin “Kal” Kallaugher’s bread and butter. For fifty years the cartoonist has rendered newsmakers in a fleshy museum of knobbly noses, splayed teeth, dewlaps, wattles, and vast foreheads. 

He’s produced some 10,000 cartoons for the Baltimore Sun and The Economist—in 1978 he became the first cartoonist hired by the latter—and his work is syndicated in more than 100 newspapers worldwide.

Over the years, he has exhibited his work at the Tate Gallery in London and the Library of Congress, and he’s won numerous awards in both Europe and the United States, including the National Press Foundation’s Berryman Award for editorial cartoons in 2002 and 2017—the only cartoonist to win twice. 

In 2015 and 2020, he was a Pulitzer Prize finalist.

The syndicated cartoon has gone to dozen of papers & news outlets with no problem, is apparently still up on Truth Social, but may have lost him one newspaper client and one monthly contributor.

After two years of virtual meetings, the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists will be gathering in person this year for their annual convention.

Cartoon Crossroads Columbus has invited the AAEC to join them again as part of the CXC Festival the first weekend of October. 

As they did in 2019, the political cartoonists will hold a joint confab with CXC in Columbus, Ohio, from Oct. 6-9, 2022.

Drawing genius Kim Jung Gi died on October 3 in Paris of a heart attack as he was about to catch a plane to New York after a long stay in Paris where he had an ongoing exhibition at Galerie Maghen. . He was 47 years old.

The US Postal Service is celebrating the creator of "Peanuts"

The United States Postal Service will commemorate the 100th birthday of Charles Schulz with Forever stamps of his famous characters.

Ten different designs on each sheet of 20 stamps will feature the "Peanuts" gang, including Charlie Brown, Lucy, Franklin, Sally, Pigpen, Linus, Snoopy (with Woodstock), Schroeder, Peppermint Patty, and Marcie.

Postmedia cuts Monday print editions

Winners of the European Cartoon Award 2022

The European Press Prize and Studio Europa Maastricht, founders of the European Cartoon Award, announced the names of the winner and runners-up of this year's edition of the award. 

The first prize was won by the Cuban cartoonist Carlos David Fuentes, for his work "Putin in Ukraine" published by the French magazine Courrier International. 

The two runners-up are Marilena Nardi (Italy) and Harry Burton (Ireland). Honorable mentions were awarded to Jean-Michel Delambre (France) and Vasco Gargalo (Portugal).

Extension of the "Au sujet de Sa Majesté" exhibition

The  exhibition about the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II  has been changed to a memorial. 

All summer we had a great attendance, with enthusiastic visitors. Because of this success and with the sad news of her passing, the exhibition has been extended to October 16.

"Living & Dying in America" by Steve Brodner

Every day, late at night or early in the morning, from March 26, 2020 to January 1, 2022, the political cartoonist and illustrator Steve Brodner would get to work. 

In those midnight hours, he would review the day’s reportage, sit down at his drawing board, and memorialize a singular person or event that played a role, willingly or unwillingly, in shaping that day.

Boris Cartoon stirs controversy

There has been a good deal of outrage over the most recent Boris cartoon published online Monday afternoon and in print Tuesday morning. 

It depicted an elderly lady in Montreal not paying attention while her small dog pissed in the direction of a poster commemorating René Lévesque’s centenary.
