Ohio State receives collection from 'underground comix' master Jay Lynch

From The Columbus Dispatch.

The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum at Ohio State University has acquired the personal collection of underground cartoonist Jay Lynch, library officials announced on Friday.

The collection includes original art, comics, correspondence and other material from Lynch, 71, who is best known as the creator and editor of “Bijou Funnies” in the 1960s and 1970s.

“We’re honored that Jay is entrusting his extraordinary collection to us,” museum curator Jenny Robb said in a news release. “It would be impossible to overestimate the value of these materials for research into the underground comix movement.”

Underground comix generally were self-published and contained material not permitted in mainstream comics at the time, including sexuality and drug use.

Lynch created the strip “Nard N’ Pat” which ran in the “Bijou Funnies.” He was also a frequent guest writer for “MAD” magazine and for Topps Co. products such as the “Bazooka Joe” bubble-gum comics and the “Garbage Pail Kids” and “Wacky Packages” trading-card series.

The library, founded in 1977, contains more than 300,000 original cartoons; 67,000 serials, including comic books; and 45,000 books.

“I knew my collection would be given the greatest care and respect at (the Ireland library),” Lynch said. “My interest in comix goes far beyond just my work in creating them, and this collection is representative of my lifelong interest in satire.”
