Treasures of comic strip art on "Sunday Morning"

An original copy of "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century."

Bill Blackbeard was something of a superhero. During his lifetime, he collected and preserved 2.5 million ephemeral artifacts of comic strip art, including newspapers and Sunday color sections dating as far back as 1893. 

Treasures from his collection are now featured in a new exhibit, "Man Saves Comics," at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum at Ohio State University. 

"CBS Sunday Morning" is broadcast on CBS beginning at 9:00 a.m. ET.

After studying at the Sorbonne and Central School - now Central St Martins - respectively, she entered the world of print journalism, working as a cartoonist for several British newspapers from the late 60's onwards.

Mike Thompson becomes the Star Tribune editorial cartoonist

Mike Thompson was hired as the new staff editorial cartoonist for the Minneapolis Star Tribune where he succeeds Steve Sack, who retired from the position last year.

He comes to Minneapolis by way of USA Today, where he was staff editorial cartoonist, and before that the Detroit Free Press, where he worked on staff for more than two decades.

2023 World Press Photo Contest

This year’s World Press Photo Contest global winners highlight the climate crisis, community, war’s impact on civilians, and the importance of press photography around the world.

The four global winners were selected from 24 regional winners, which were chosen from more than 60,000 entries. 

The entries were judged first by six regional juries and all winners chosen by a global jury consisting of the regional jury chairs plus the global jury chair.

This year we asked comic artist Cab (Utown, Hiver nucléaire) to create our new posters.

Inspired by this year’s theme "Creation: from imagination to reality", the Montreal artist wanted to capture that magic moment just before the pencil touches the paper.

Not one, not two, but three variations of the poster will be displayed this year to represent how both the script and drawings come to life.

Edward Koren 1935-2023

New Yorker cartoonist Ed Koren, known for his furry or fuzzy beast, has died at eighty-seven at his home in Brookfield, Vermont.

Over the last 60 years, he produced more than a thousand gags, illustrations, and covers for the magazine, a feat equalled only by five other New Yorker artists.

18th International Exhibition of Contemporary Illustrators

From April 15 to June11, the 18th International Exhibition of Contemporary Illustrators will be held in Cremona, Italy with Guy Billout as guest of honour. 

There will be an exhibition dedicated to his work with around 200 pieces spanning 50 years of his career.

Al Jaffee, a cartoonist who folded in when the trend in magazine publishing was to fold out, thereby creating one of Mad magazine’s most recognizable and enduring features, died on Monday in Manhattan.
