The festival’s flagship live event will be held, as usual, in the Bandstand on the seafront.

In 2013 an Iranian cartoonist named Ali arrived in Australia. He was 21 and hoped to live in a country that valued freedom, a country where he’d be safe. The Australian government put him in a detention camp. He’s been in a detention camp ever since.

Richard Thompson 1957-2016

Richard Thompson, the “Cul de Sac” cartoonist who is widely considered one of the greatest comic-strip creators and illustrators of his generation, died Wednesday in Northern Virginia, family friends confirm. He was 58.

Thompson, who lived in Arlington, died of complications from Parkinson’s disease, the effects of which he had endured for eight years.

Jack Davis 1924-2016

One of America's all-time great cartoonists has left us at the age of 91. Jack Davis made his initial fame in EC Comics like Tales from the Crypt and MAD but went on to become one of the most visible (and imitated) creators of advertising, movie posters and record album covers ever. 

His ability to make anything funnier when he drew it and his keen eye for caricatures could be seen darn near everywhere in this country for well more than half a century.

Turk Satirical Magazine LeMan Banned from Newstands

The offices of LeMan, one of Turkey’s leading satirical magazines, have been reportedly attacked by supporters of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan after criticism of the magazine appeared in the pro-government newspaper, Yeni Safak.

 The latest issue of LeMan has also been banned from newstands according to numerous sources. The cover of the banned issue suggests that both soldiers and civilians involved in the country’s recent unsuccessful coup were pawns in a larger game.

The first issue of The American Bystander, a new print-only humor magazine, began with a letter from the publisher predicting failure. “This is willfully re-launching the Titanic,” Michael Gerber wrote last fall, “knowing full well it will sink.”

Founding a magazine that you can’t read online does seem like the kind of thing Max Bialystock would do if he went into publishing instead of musical theater. But the old-fashioned form happens to be a perfect match for the refined pleasures of this delightful publication, an essential read for comedy nerds.

Carlos Nine 1944-2016

Sad to report, we have lost Carlos Nine (1944-2016), a fabulously baroque visionary artist from Argentina. In 2001 he won the best foreign album prize at Angoulême for Le Canard qui aimait les poules. I interviewed Nine (pronounced 'nee-nay') in 2010 when he came to London as part of Comica Festival with Thomas Dassance from the Viñetas Sueltas festival in Buenos Aires.

New Yorker Cartoonist Michael Crawford, 1941 – 2016

Michael Crawford, who began publishing his drawings in The New Yorker in 1984, passed away yesterday afternoon at age seventy-five.

In 2014, Locust Moon published Little Nemo: Dream Another Dream, a huge, full-color anthology featuring work by 100 comic artists and illustrators. Each of these artists was asked to create a new version of McCay’s famous strip, resulting in a rich and diverse collection of homages to a remarkable man.

This exhibit presents original artwork from the book, and featured artists include Peter Bagge, David Mack, Paul Pope, Carla Speed McNeil, Farel Dalrymple, and more. Ohio State’s iteration of this traveling exhibit, curated by Josh O’Neill, Andrew Carl and Chris Stevens, will also include McCay originals from The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum collection.
