Ed Hall 1962-2024

Talented artist, editorial cartoonist, designer and teacher Ed Hall lost his battle to cancer last Sunday.

He bravely battled the disease over the last 8 years, never letting it slow his creativity.

Ed Hall graduated from The University of Florida with a Master’s degree in Fine Art in 1986.

While in college he did political cartoons and illustrations for The Florida Independent Alligator, UF’s school newspaper.

After college Hall worked for several weekly publications in and around Jacksonville, and finally settled at The Baker County Press in Macclenny (just outside of Jacksonville) where he worked as the weekly cartoonist.

Over the last 30 years, Hall has won numerous journalism awards, and numerous fine art awards in national and international competitions.

In 2003, Ed was presented the 53rd Annual Green Eyeshade Award for weekly cartoons by The Society of Professional Journalists.

Ed has also won the prestigious Florida Press Club Award three times, and for the past three years he was awarded the Sunshine State Award for Editorial Cartooning, also presented by The Society of Professional Journalists.

Ed’s work is published in newspapers across North America and worldwide.

His cartoons have been featured in USA Today, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, The New York Times and on CNN Headline News.

Internationally, his work has been published in Le Monde (France), Le Temps (Switzerland) and in Germany’s EuIenspiegel

In 2003 he was asked to join Artizans, a Canadian based syndicate.

Through Artizans, Ed’s cartoons appeared weekly in newspapers across North America.

Ed’s archive at Artizans has over 5,000 cartoons from February 2003 to his latest from this month.

Dozens of those cartoons plus some of his illustrations are viewed in a larger format at his Halltoons site.

Ed has also been a favourite at The Daily Cartoonist, frequently turning up in Mike’s CSotD.

His illustrative and fine art work has also been displayed in galleries and museums across the world.

Some of Ed’s fine art is available for viewing at Ed Hall Art and on his Facebook page, among the many tributes.

His work is also held in the permanent collection of The St. Augustine Art Association.

UPDATE

In late August 2021, Ed accomplished the rare feat of being published in Le Monde and The Washington Post on the same day!

Wes Tyrell, president of the Association of Canadian Cartoonists, remembers our good friend.

Brother Ed Hall made you want to live in Florida just to be near him and see what the heck he was up to. He inspired so many of us to draw, not just the governments of the day, but nature, the animal kingdom, the human figure, the world around us and certainly the silliness that is everywhere.
He told me often how he loved being a member of our Canadian Cartoonists Association and felt right at home north of the border. I loved how much he loved saying that. What a dude. RIP
