Son O’ God Comics

From Flashback.

IN 1972, National Lampoon magazine introduced the super hero Son O’ God, created by Michel Choquette, Sean Kelly and Neal Adams

Son ‘O God who turned from nebbishy Jewish New Yorker Benny David – 30-years-old; living with controlling parents; no aptitude for any sport – who turns into a WASP wonderman on a mission to tackle Catholicism, the Antichrist Pope and “the scourge of Islam”.

"The Someday Funnies" reviewed in The Comics Journal

Bob Levin in The Comics Journal.

Time often gets a bad rap. It strips away. It erodes. It brings forth loss.  It guarantees the passage of all things. But sometimes time delivers a gift, like a sea washing up a pirate’s treasure on the shore.

In 2004, it was suggested I write about Michel Choquette and The Someday Funnies, a veritable Lost Dutchman’s lode of comic history.

A Primer on Newspaper Cartoons

From The Someday Funnies, edited by Michel Choquette, Abrams, New York, 2011

A very interesting article by Noel Murray published on the A.V. Club website.
Newspaper Comics 101: The Gags
Rarely has an art form experienced as astonishing a rise in popularity and esteem as the newspaper comic strip did in the 20th century, and rarely has an art form fallen out of favor as abruptly and alarmingly. During the “yellow journalism” wars of the late 19th century, publishers relied on cartoons to drive up circulation, and in the decades that followed, newspapers developed large, lavish comics sections, with features meant to appeal to children and adults alike. Intellectuals of the early 20th century wrote essays hailing what was being called an original American art, and the creators of the best-read strips became household names. The boom-times for newspaper comics extended deep into the second half of the 20th century as well, as paperback collections and merchandise turned the biggest strips into cash cows for their syndicates.

The Someday Funnies (a sneak preview)

I just got back from Montreal where I visited Michel Choquette who allowed me to take a few photos of the layout of "The Someday Funnies", a collection of comic strips, drawn in the early seventies, that will be published next November by Abrams in New York.
One of my early works will be published alongside those of Sergio Aragones, Gahan Wilson, R.O. Blechman, Don Martin and Ralph Steadman no less!
