Canadian producers are aiming to give 1970s cult superhero Captain Canuck his big-screen debut - and they're planning to begin filming the storied crimefighter's story as early as next summer.

The 50 greatest graphic novels of all time

... according to a survey done by Teddy Jamieson of the Herald Scotland.


The humble comic-strip can trace its origins to Hogarth and the painters of Japan's Edo period, but for most of the 20th century it was regarded as a second-rate pulp form.

That reputation has changed dramatically in recent years. Now, the graphic novel (a catch-all term at best) has embraced Pulitzer Prize-winning memoirs, hard-hitting journalism and astute social commentary. Cartoonists get nominated for the Costa Prize and the Edinburgh International Book Festival has a whole strand - Stripped - dedicated to graphic fiction.

So we thought we'd ask cartoonists, novelists, critics, publishers, journalists, comic historians, comedians and the odd musician what books should be in everybody's library.

In a study about political cartoons and their role in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, social researcher Ilan Danjoux concluded that cartoons have no power to predict events. But he did discover that they are accurate gauges of public opinion; they chronicle events, not neccesarily in terms of facts, but in terms of opinions.

The Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum is pleased to announce our Grand Opening Festival of Cartoon Art, to be held at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio from November 14th-17th. The Festival, a celebration of cartoons, comics and their creators, is held every three years. This year we have more to celebrate than ever: the opening of our new expanded facility in Sullivant Hall.

Jean-Claude Suarès, an illustrator who radically altered the way editorial illustration was used at The New York Times as the first art director of its Op-Ed page, died on July 30 in Engelwood, N.J.. He was 71.
