Aurel Animated Feature ‘Josep' Selected for Cannes Film Festival

The sole French animated title in this year’s Cannes Official Selection “Josep” marks the feature debut of editorial journalist Aurélien Froment. 

Better known as Aurel, the award-winning cartoonist has filed illustrated reports for French daily Le Monde since 2007, while authoring graphic novels about jazz and international politics.

He’s also spent the past decade developing this feature debut, which is co-produced out of Catalonia, a formally inventive, decade-spanning portrait of Catalan artist Josep Bartolí.

Al Jaffee Retires at 99

Al Jaffee, officially the longest-working comic artist ever, has decided to retire at age 99. So to mark his farewell, Mad’s “Usual Gang of Idiots” will salute Jaffee with a tribute issue next week.

It will be the magazine’s final regular issue to offer new material, including Jaffee’s final Fold-In, 65 years after he made his Mad debut.

Austrian architect and caricaturist Gustav Peichl died on November 17, 2019 in his home in Vienna.

Born on March 18, 1928, he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1953 and, in order to pay for architectural school, drew caricatures under the pseudonym Pei to protect his identity from the Red Army, which occupied Austria at the time.
