European Cartoon Awards 2025

The European Cartoon Award has announced the winners of its 2025 contest. 

The first prize was awarded to the Dutch cartoonist Tjeerd Royaards, for his work published in the Dutch outlet Trouw

The two Runners-up are cartoonists Emad Hajjaj (Jordan) and Zehra Ömeroğlu (Turkey). 

An Honourable Mention was awarded to Patrick Chappatte (Switzerland):

Unfortunately, since the syndicate went under at the end of December, I am happy to announce that I have since joined Cartoon Movement.

Cartoon Movement editor on the House of Cartoons in France

The future location of the House of Press and Satirical Cartoons in Paris.

Last week, French president Emmanuel Macron announced the creation of a European House of Press and Satirical Cartoons in France. 

Good news for editorial cartooning, of course. I am of the opinion that every country should have a center for political cartooning, or a center for journalism and press freedom, with a section dedicated to political cartoons.

A portrait of cartoonist Hossien Rezaye

Hossien Rezaye arrived in Amsterdam on one of the final flights out of Kabul. A combination of timing and luck allowed him a narrow escape from the Taliban as the extremists encroached on Afghanistan's capital. 

He was evacuated to the Netherlands with help from The Cartoon Movement – an Amsterdam-based NGO – and the Dutch Foreign Ministry.

Tom Janssen wins 2nd edition of the European Cartoon Award

The European Press Prize and Studio Europa Maastricht have announced the name of the winner and runners-up of this year’s edition of the European Cartoon Award

With his work EU and Belarus published in the newspaper Trouw, Dutch cartoonist Tom Janssen won the first prize. The two runners-up are Dutch cartoonist, Hajo de Reijger, and the Turkish artist Musa Gumus - both published by Cartoon Movement.

The WPFC gathers journalists, media companies, human rights defenders, members of the judiciary, policymakers, academics, youth, NGOs and everyone who is interested in press freedom worldwide.

Charlie Hebdo trial resumes

The trial over the 2015 Charlie Hebdo attack resumes in Paris on Monday after being suspended for three weeks when several defendants tested positive for coronavirus.

But some French legal professionals have taken issue with the fact that primary suspect Ali Riza Polat, who is ill with COVID-19, will not appear in person at court, but via video link.

Cartoon Movement, in partnership with Cartooning for Peace, is launching an international cartoon competition for the World Press Freedom Conference 2020.
