Ruben Bolling Profile in The New Yorker

“Tom the Dancing Bug,” which Ruben Bolling began publishing widely in 1990, has always been free-form and vaudevillian from week to week—original characters, recurring parodies and satires, one-offs, a terrific long-running meta-funny-pages gag.

His illustration style tends toward a tidy clean-line aesthetic, à la “Tintin,” but it morphs to suit whatever he’s up to: hatched and shaded portrait-style depictions of celebrities and politicians; imitations of other artists; fake ads, posters, and informational broadsides. 

Early on, Bolling had “Saturday Night Live,” Mad magazine, and “Mr. Show” in mind as inspirations. 

The strip has become more political over time, especially in recent years, though the past few weeks of U.S. election news—an assassination attempt in one party, the passing of the candidacy torch in the other—has been atypical in its intensity. 

Like all satirists of our era, Bolling has learned to adapt.

"What, Me Worry? The Art and Humor of MAD Magazine" Exhibition

The Norman Rockwell Museum will explore the art and satire of MAD magazine in the exhibit, What, Me Worry? The Art and Humor of MAD Magazine. 

Over 150 pieces of original art will be displayed, including paintings, drawings, cartoons, ephemera, artifacts, and other media. 

One gallery will be focused solely on the work of Mort Drucker, who spent more than five decades drawing caricatures and illustrations for MAD.

Cartoonists rally to Steve Bell's defense

The Greek Cartoonists Association strongly protests the Guardian’s dismissal of colleague Steve Bell, one of the best cartoonists in the world. 

The termination of his employment took place in the aftermath of unsupported accusations of "anti-Semitic stereotypes" in his last cartoon, accusations that the paper's management sadly adopted .

Cold feet at The Guardian

The Guardian has rejected a Steve Bell cartoon of Netanyahu inspired by a famous Lyndon B. Johnson Vietnam cartoon made in 1966 by David Levine.

Anita Kunz Exhibition in New York

A solo show of Anita Kunz's work will be taking place at the Philippe Labaune Gallery in Chelsea, New York City. The opening will be held Thursday, February 9 from 6 to 8pm. 

On display will be a number of her New Yorker covers along with large works from the book Another History of Art, a satirical look at art history, published by Fantagraphics.

None of these photos were taken by a camera. All of these images were created by the artificial intelligence text-to-image generator DALL-E. Named for Salvador Dali and Pixar’s WALL-E, DALL-E creates images based on prompts such as:

• “A hobbit house designed by Zaha [H]adid.”
• “A woman in a red coat looking up at the sky in the middle of Times Square.”
• “Red and yellow bell peppers in a bowl with a floral pattern on a green rug photo.”

National Lampoon Editor Sean Kelly Dies at 81

Sean Kelly, a wry master of literary and musical parodies who helped infuse National Lampoon with the sharp-edged and often crude humor it became known for, died on July 11 in Manhattan. He was 81.

His wife, Patricia Todd, said the cause of death, in a hospital, was heart and renal failure.

Don Asmussen 1962-2021

Cartoonist Don Asmussen, passed away on December 9, 2021, at the age of 59, after a long battle with brain cancer.

Asmussen, 59, had been with the San Francisco Chronicle since it merged with the Hearst-owned Examiner in 2000, having worked at the Examiner for several years before that.
