Mikhail Zlatkovsky

I first saw the work of Mikhail Zlatkovsky when, as part of the jury of the 25th International Salon of Cartoons in Montreal in 1987, we came across his drawing of a headless flag bearer. It expressed eloquently the folly of nationalism.

The other jury members, Hans Georg Rauch, Jerry Robinson, Rinalto Traini (Editor of Comic Art and President of the Lucca Cartoon Festival in Italy) as well as Henri Barras (Artistic director of Montreal's Place des Arts), were equally impressed and he was ultimately awarded the Grand Prize.

The Tough Road to Comic Stip Syndication

Rob Tornoe in Editor & Publisher.

For aspiring comic strip artists, columnists, and other content producers, newspaper syndication has always been a tough mountain to climb. With only a handful of new features picked up each year out of hundreds submitted, the odds are stacked against those cartoonists and writers who diligently compile the required six weeks’ worth of completed work, only to receive form letters informing them their skills aren’t up to snuff. And that was before economic recession struck.

Now it’s tougher than ever to make the jump to syndication.

Matt Bors on the 2013 AAEC Convention

From Bors Blog.

Drawing With Dinos

I’m still processing the fact that I got drunk with Chuck Asay and debated whether or not Jesus was a communist.

These are the type of things that happen when you gather America’s editorial cartoonists in a hotel for a weekend; Christian fundamentalists mingle with Marxists over local microbrews and respectfully discuss how the other is totally wrong on everything. Except on editors. We’re all correct that they are terrible people for not running us.

Alan Gardner's 2013 AAEC Convention wrap-up

From The Daily Cartoonist.

Editorial cartoonists Steve Benson, Patrick F. Bagley and Kevin Kallaugher joined Doug at KUER 90.1 studio to talk about the art and potency of their work.

This year’s annual convention of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists wrapped up on Saturday night (or early Sunday morning for some of us) in Salt Lake City. Full disclosure: I am not an unbiased source when it comes to this convention. I live near Salt Lake and am friends with the convention host Pat Bagley. That said, here’s my thoughts on the various events and issues surrounding this year’s convention.
