The Ohio State University Libraries presents The Dog Show: Two Centuries of Canine Cartoons, an exhibition curated by comics historian Brian Walker, features over one hundred different characters documenting the fascination that cartoonists have had with our furry friends. 

The Dog Show is on view June 19 through October 31, 2021. Admission is free.

Clay Jones Suspended from Facebook

 

Cartoonist Clay Jones has been suspended from the Facebook platform for unspecified violations of community standards. He has appealed.

AAEC cancels in-person convention in 2021

The Association of American Editorial Cartoonists has joined other cartoon festivals in dropping their plans for an in-person convention in 2021. 

The AAEC had been in talks with the Association of Canadian Cartoonists to meet in Ottawa later this year.

No editorial cartoons in Postmedia Opinion pages

Four of today's big Canadian city papers (the Calgary Herald, the Montreal Gazette, the Ottawa Citizen, and the Regina Leader Post) are running stock photos in the traditional spot meant for editorial cartoons on their Opinion pages. 

It's not due to a lack of satire available for them to run, it's budget cuts (saving papers $15-20 running freelance cartoons), and editors ignoring the fact that editorial cartoons are often the first thing readers look for in their newspapers. 

Let these Postmedia papers know this is an unacceptable trend.

The 2021 Doug Wright Awards

Last night, Saturday, May 8th, the winners of the 17th annual Doug Wright Awards were announced, during a virtual ceremony (a featured event of the 2021 Toronto Comic Arts Festival), pre-recorded and livestreamed on Facebook and YouTube. 

Don McKellar once again hosted this second pandemic edition of the awards, still trapped in his garage, though this year assisted by the drummer Alaska B.

More than 200 viewers tuned in to the livestream, which featured the DWA co-founder Seth in front of a gold curtain, virtually handing out trophies to the winners.

Sophie Bédard is this year’s winner of The Doug Wright Award for best book with Lonely Boys published by Pow Pow Press in Montreal.
