International Human Rights Day

 From Cartooning for Peace

Cartoon by Willem

Like every December 10th, the world celebrates human rights with this day that the UN has placed this year under the sign of equality and against poverty.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights opens with this first article: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”.

A principle that sounds obvious and yet, we must admit that it is not self-evident.
While the World Inequality Lab has just published an edifying report on inequality, it appears that the Covid-19 pandemic has widened the gap between rich and poor: the richest 10% own three quarters of the world’s wealth.

This trend has very serious political, economic, societal and environmental consequences and constitutes, along with the climate crisis, one of the main challenges for humanity.
