Mike Ramirez Finalist 2023 Herblock Prize

From the Herblock Foundation.

To commemorate Herb Block’s legacy, the Foundation awards the annual Herblock Prize for excellence in editorial cartooning.

The Foundation created the Herblock Prize in 2004 to encourage editorial cartooning as an essential tool for preserving the rights of the American people through freedom of speech and the right of expression.

Presented each spring at the Library of Congress, the prize is awarded by The Herb Block Foundation for distinguished examples of editorial cartooning that exemplify the courageous standard set by Herblock and is judged by a panel of outside experts.

The Herblock Prize finalist receives a tax free $7,500 cash award.

Michael Ramirez is a two-time winner of the prestigious Pulitzer Prize in 1994 and 2008, the 2015 Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year and a three-time Sigma Delta Chi, Society of Professional Journalism Award winner and the 2022 Overseas Press Club of America winner.

Michael Ramirez is the editorial Cartoonist for the Las Vegas Review-Journal and is internationally syndicated by Creators Syndicate.

“An editorial cartoon is not just a funny picture, it is a powerful instrument of journalism, sometimes sharp and refined, its message cutting quickly to the point, and other times, blunt and overpowering, seizing the readers’ attention with its dark imagery.”

Ramirez is a Lincoln Fellow, and an honorary member of Pi Sigma Alpha National Political Science Honor Society.

He has won almost every major journalism award in America.

Michael is the recipient of the prestigious UCI Medal from the University of California, Irvine and is the author of two books, Everyone Has the Right to My Opinion and Give Me Liberty or Give Me Obamacare.

Michael Ramirez’s work is seen world-wide through Creators Syndicate.

The former editorial cartoonist for the Los Angeles Times, Ramirez’s cartoons have been featured on BBC, CNN, Fox News, and Fox Business and seen in USA Today, the Washington Post, the New York Times, Time Magazine, and US News and World Report and daily at www.reviewjournal.com/opinion/michael-ramirez/ and www.michaelpramirez.com
